Side-event at the STI Forum 2022

I. Context
As an important component of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM), the Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs (STI Forum) convened by the UNECOSOC and organized by the United Nations Interagency Task Force on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (IATT) and a 10-member Group has been held annually since 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It brings together top experts and scholars in the field of sustainable development, focusing on the role of scientific and technological innovation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and reporting its results to the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) every year.
This year, the seventh annual Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDGs (STI Forum), convened by the President of ECOSOC H.E. Mr. Collen Vixen Kelapile who has appointed two co-chairs - H.E. Mr. Kennedy Godfrey Gastorn, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Tanzania to the United Nations, and H.E. Mr. Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the United Nations, will be held from 5 to 6 May 2022.
Stakeholders from the government, international organizations, enterprises, colleges and universities, NGO etc., play an important role for applying science, technology, and innovation (STI) for the SDGs. To better advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development from city’s level, and give full play the role of multi-partners in promoting regional scientific and technological innovation cooperation, the Session on the Synergistic Cooperation Promoting City’s Sustainable Development with S&T is planning to be held by SISD, which will be a side event on the STI Forum 2022. A summary incorporating the key recommendations and messages will be submitted to the UN Secretariat after the Session. Details please see https://sisd.org.cn/.
II. Objective
The theme for the STI Forum 2022 will be: “Science, technology and innovation for building back better from COVID-19 while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The main objective of the Session will closely be closely aligned with that and will have an exclusive focus on the role and contributions of science, technology and innovation. The Session hopes will provide a platform to:
s Reflect on how S&T play a better role in improving the cities’ low-carbon development
s Strengthen the cooperation of scientific and technological innovation, industry-university-research integration
s Establish regional sustainable development and dual-carbon development through a continuous partnership
III. Format, time and venue
The session will be organized virtually on Thursday, May 5 2022, from Beijing time 7:30-9:00p.m.(7:30-9:00a.m. NY time)in Shenzhen, China by ZOOM.

As one of the side events of the STI Forum 2022, the session will also extend its internal nature of general principle of collaboration and multi-stakeholder, including United Nations entities, civil society and NGOs, private sector, philanthropic sector, scientific community, academia, youth, indigenous peoples and other stakeholder groups. It is important to secure participation from the broad range of communities among S&T field and sustainable development realm.
